Carcassonne seems to rise up out of the ground like a fairytale The town's history is long and often tragic, especially the chapter on 13th-century crusades against the Cathars that lived there. It was Gauls who first built fortifications on the site. It is often busy in summer with tourists and activities, shops and restaurants and even medieval knights jousting shows.
Albi or Carcassonne offer endless opportunities for lunch out and you will find restaurants to tempt you on every corner.
