Watercolour painting holidays in France - art materials

Outdoor painting in the Tarn is about capturing the moment of light, mood and atmosphere in your subject.

You will be provided with all the kit and materials to paint outdoors, you need to bring brushes, paper, paint and a palette. Brushes are very personal, varied and people often prefer their own. If you don’t have these, we can source them for you if you wish. See brushes and paint below for advice and suppliers. Alternatively you can rent them from us.

Holiday kit we provide for the week, included in the price

Easel, water bucket, chair, painting board and kit required to stretch or attach paper to the board.

Let us prepare and provide your paint brushes, palette and paper and have them ready for you when you arrive

For a price between 90 - 140 euros (depending upon availability) we will provide all the kit you need as shown below.

Or rent from us for 40 euros per week including paper.

To take advantage of either of these offers, please let us know when you book that you require this.

Equipment you need to bring

Brushes

Brushes - you will need the following size brushes on this holiday

Size 12

Size 8

Size 4

Size 2 or rigger, or small sword liner

Brushes are very personal and artists often have their own preferences, some pay a king's ransom for Windsor and Newton Series 7 sable and though expensive they will last a lifetime. Other artists buy lesser sable, or sable and synthetic mix, these are cheaper, and will eventually need replacing. For a beginner I would recommend Ken Bromley art supplies sable brushes. You may source these yourself from the link provided, or we will source for you if you ask.

Paper

No larger than 36 x 29xcm A3 (lots of watercolour sketches will be smaller)

100% acid free rough paper at least 300gsm (140lb)

My preferred brands are Bockingford, Saunders Waterford and Arches)

Palette

Bring a palette that has deep mixing wells to hold a lot of water

Sketchbook & pencils (preferably 4B)

Small or large, it's up to you.  Just something to make a quick sketch and a few notes.

Paint

As with brushes, paint is a matter of personal choice. To capture the light mood and atmosphere of the Tarn I recommend Windsor and Newton artists watercolour 5ml tubes, in particular the following colours:

Cadmium Yellow

Raw Sienna

Cobalt Violet

Burnt Sienna

Light Red

Alizarin Crimson

Cadmium Red

Cerrulean Blue

Permanent Mauve

Burnt Umber

Windsor Blue (red shade)

French Ultramarine

Cobalt Blue

These can be sourced at Ken Bromley art supplies or alternatively ask and we will source for you.

As an alternative to tubes, ST Petersburg White Nights 24 half pan set is great value and has all the colours needed. Again you can get these at Ken Bromley art supplies
